Election Calendar 2012 Republican Presidential Primary March 6, 2012 Primary Election Day Aug. ? , 2012 Last day to Register for General Election Oct. 15, 2012 General Election Day Nov 6, 2012 Both the General Assembly and local governing bodies elected by district must redistrict their election districts based on the 2010 census Officials to be elected by area voters in 2012 Federal: President, Vice-President, 1 Senator, 1 Representative POLLS ARE OPEN FROM 6 A.M. TO 7 P.M. FOR ALL ELECTIONS Check your voter registration card for your correct voting site. All voters are required to present identification at the polls. Contact your General Registrar for appropriate forms of identification. You are eligible to register to vote if you are:
  • A citizen of the United States
  • A resident of Virginia
  • At least 18 years of age or will be by the next general election

Register to Vote

VOTER REGISTRATION Where You may pick up a Voter Registration Application online or at the following sites: County Registrar Office, Public Library; Department of Motor Vehicles Offices; Public Assistance Agency offices, i.e., those offering food stamps, aid to dependent children and/or aid to persons with disabilities, etc.; Military Recruitment Offices, or District Governmental Centers. For other locations and for more information contact your General Registrar. When You may register year round except during the 21 days prior to a general or primary election or 13 days prior to a special general election. Registration will be permanent under most circumstances. If You Move To remain a qualified voter, you must notify your local voter registration office of any change in your name or address. For information, contact your General Registrar.

ABSENTEE VOTING Any registered voter who expects to be away or otherwise physically unable to go to the polls on Election Day, may request an absentee ballot. By Mail or Fax: Application forms may be requested from the General Registrar's Office beginning ten months before the general election and are also available at registration sites and governmental centers. Mailed applications must be received by the General Registrar not less than seven days before an election.

Voted ballots must be received in the office by 7 p.m. Election Day to be counted. In Person: Registered voters may apply for and vote an absentee ballot in person at the Registrar's Office beginning 45 days before an election. In-person absentee votes must be cast by 5 p.m. on the Saturday before each Election Day.
